Prevent, respond and recover from viruses and attacks

The healthcare industry handles some of the most sensitive data and has proven to be a prime target for cyber attacks.

Protect health information and data

Protected health information or personal health information (PHI) can include medical histories, test results, insurance information, and other data that healthcare organizations need to serve their patients and clients best. Under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, healthcare organizations are limited in what information they can collect, share, or use in marketing. Patients must also be provided with their PHI if requested.

Laws protect healthcare businesses as well as their clients, but also create a need for a cybersecurity strategy that can handle a complex regulatory environment as well as provide vigilant monitoring. Lumifi has helped many healthcare providers protect their business' PHI, employee, and business information.

Notable breaches

In 2014 Anthem Inc., a health insurance company, experienced the largest data breach from a U.S. healthcare institution in history to that date. The hack was executed through a phishing attack, resulting in 79 million exposed customer records. The compromised information included medical IDs, social security numbers, e-mail addresses, and employment information, according to USA Today. As a result, Anthem Inc. settled several civil class-action lawsuits at the cost of $115 million. The company also ended up paying a $16 million settlement to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)--the largest HHS data breach settlement, according to Modern Healthcare. Customers who were breached now have to stay extra vigilant for identity theft.

More recently in 2018, insurance giant Aflac reported over 10,000 records of protected health information and other identifying information such as names, dates of birth, addresses, policy numbers, social security numbers, and bank account information was compromised, according to HealthITSecurity.com. Hackers were able to gain access through independent contractors’ email accounts, according to Insurance Thought Leadership. The company said it would offer free credit monitoring to customers whose social security, bank account, or credit card numbers were exposed.

Implement preventative measures

Not only do healthcare companies suffer legal and financial consequences, but their mishandling of breaches also results in loss of public image and trust. To prevent breaches, healthcare organizations must be willing to invest in cybersecurity solutions that will detect malicious activity across all endpoints such as desktops, laptops, tablets, and other medical devices connected to the network or internet.
