As distribution channels for content grows and accessibility increases, media and entertainment companies have seen a rise in returns. But this also exposes them to more attacks.

In such a competitive environment, media and entertainment organizations must be aware of leaked content, piracy, vulnerabilities to streaming services, alongside the usual culprits like phishing and malware.

Protect your Intellectual Property (IP)

Media and Entertainment companies must safeguard their proprietary Intellectual Property (IP). This can include content that is being developed, content already being distributed, and content that is shelved or stored for archival purposes.

Notable Breach: Sony Pictures Hack

One notable example was the Sony Pictures hack in 2014. A hacker group deployed malware to their networks and was able to get ahold of emails between employees, information on executive pay, copies of unreleased Sony films, plans for future projects, and scripts. In addition, the hackers also gained personally identifiable information on employees and their families.

The attack was conducted using malware and although Sony was not specifically mentioned the advisory, US-CERT said that attackers used a Server Message Block (SMB) Worm Tool to conduct attacks against a major entertainment company.

DDoS Attacks

Increased online channels for media companies means greater protection around your network to prevent a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. These kinds of attacks can halt legitimate traffic to your online services like websites, mobile apps, and more.

When botnets are deployed against your network, they can create serious loss of sales and registrations.

If your organization has large web publishing operations where each impression matters, or has a robust streaming service, you need a team of experts to secure your network. Make sure you have 24/7/365 security coverage with advanced filtering and threat hunting capabilities.

Notable Breach: 2016 Dyn Cyberattack

In 2016 prominent Domain Name System (DNS) provider Dyn experienced a DDoS attack that affected major media outlets like BBC, CNN, Fox News, HBO, Netflix, Spotify, and Twitter, among others.

While these sites were down, media and entertainment companies likely experienced lost revenue and existing customer frustration.

Don’t let an attack ruin your reputation

Protect your organization’s reputation. Media and entertainment companies face the public every day. Maintaining trust and loyalty among customers is vital to these organizations.

PricewaterhouseCoopers released a report on consumer trust in 2017 that cited Media and Entertainment as having just 6 percent of respondents’ trust, compared to industries like Hospitals and Banks at 42 percent.

In addition to standard security measures like implementing an Endpoint Detection and Response tool and Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) platform, threat intelligence can play a large role in your organization’s reputation management.

Some popular threat intelligence platforms can:

The key to getting the most out of all of these solutions together is to have expert deployment, tuning, and alerting set for your security team. Making sure data is validated and that unique situations for your organization (such as international business, large vendor contact base, and data protection) require an experienced security engineering team.

Compliance

While the Federal Communications Commission does not regulate companies like Netflix and HBO Now, states and other countries are implementing laws that create complex data compliance regulations for media and entertainment companies.

Having best-in-class cybersecurity solutions for your organization will save time, money and make your company more resilient to changing data privacy laws and regulations.
